China Day 15 - A Day at the Market

Here are a couple of pictures from last night.  Tim went out on the town and Sue stayed back with Sophie as she had already fallen asleep.  We are on a little island in the city called Shamian Island, which has a lot of British and French influence due to several consulates being located here in the past, and past colonization attempts.

We went off the island to go to a Cantonese restaurant which was delicious.  Last night I had spicy jellyfish for dinner (kinda rubbery).  Peter and Jack, would you like to try some?

We made a little adventure to the local market today and we saw a lot of 'interesting' things!  We took a few pictures of some of the grossest because why?  We have 8 and 9 year old boys at home!

Although the market was all new to us, Sophie was underwhelmed.  It was COLD so we bundled her up with several layers of clothes and she slept through the loud market, the honking horns, and the motorcycles on the sidewalk.  She was a spectacle in her pink outfit with her whitey parents!

Here were some of the delicacies we observed:

Delicious lamb Chicken or duck anyone?

Finger lickin' frogs Dried seahorses  -
good for what ails ya
Get your meat - fresh and unrefrigerated Yum! Skinned Dog.  This is where Lucy will go if she's bad.

Attractive animal parts with goat head included! Acres of fish and squid! More fishy delights!

Here are some pics of various veggies, spices and dried mushrooms and herbs:

We were also lucky to see the school kids out for their morning exercise!  They were very cute!

... finally here we are back at our hotel room, where Sophie is trying out her new "squeaker" shoes (they squeak when she takes a step).
